MAXWELL, Martha Dart (1831-1881). CDV Portrait of Famed Hunter and Taxidermist, Martha Maxwell. [Boulder, CO, ca. 1860s-1870s]. CDV of Maxwell with a rifle, along with one of her taxidermied animals at her feet (apparently taken in a studio, despite the caption, “In the Field”. Photo approximately 3 ½ x 2 ¼”. Mount approximately 4 x 2 ½”. Some minor rubbing. Excellent. Maxwell was an excellent hunter and taxidermist. She eventually opened a museum to display her handiwork. She was one of the first people to display animals in dioramas including natural habitats, which is largely the norm today in museums. From the Mark Rucker Collection.
