[CHICAGO DISASTERS]. A Press Photography Archive of the Tragic “Our Lady of the Angels” School Fire. [Chicago: 1958]. A collection of 11 press photos (8 x 10”), a proof of a diagram of the school on yellow paper (14 x 8 ½”), two small black and white snapshots (4 x 5”), and 66 negatives (4 x 5”) from various press organizations (UPI, AP, and Chicago American). Press photos with captions or labels on versos, a few with editorial markings, some occasional wear. Excellent. Offered with two pages from the Tuesday, December 2, 1958 issue The Chicago American newspaper, with several photos of this terrible tragedy (pages are toned, worn, torn). On Monday, December 1, 1958, a fire broke out at the Catholic elementary school, Our Lady of the Angels, just before the school was dismissed for the day. Beginning in the basement, the fire spread rapidly due to poor fire standards. In the end, 92 children and three nuns lost their lives due to smoke inhalation, heat or fire. The building was heavily damaged and had to be razed. Despite the fact that firefighters arrived within four minutes of being summoned, the fire had already been burning for nearly 40 minutes by the time they were called. This disaster led to an improvement of school safety standards and fire codes.
