[BASEBALL]. [CASTRO, Fidel (1926-2016) and CIENFUEGOS, Camilo (1932-1959), association]. Unusual Photo of Cuban Revolutionaries Castro and Cienfuegos with a Visiting American AAA Team During the 1959 Junior World Series. [Cuba: 1959]. Black and white photo of Castro and Cienfuegos with at least six members of the Minneapolis Millers, during the Junior World Series held in Cuba (the Millers, a Boston Red Sox farm team, had played the Havana Sugar Kings). 5 x 7”. A bit toned, rubbed, a small piece of tape on verso. Excellent. The revolution ended in victory for Castro and his people during the Junior World Series (third base coach Frank Verdi was struck with celebratory gunfire, but wasn’t seriously injured). Despite a hard-fought series, the Millers lost after forcing a seventh game (however, they were pretty happy to leave Cuba afterwards). The incidents of violence during the Junior World Series nearly killed baseball in Cuba, and made international ball play there end for decades. In the photo are (L-R) Cienfuegos, Gene Mauch, Castro, Vito Valentinetti, Lu Clinton and Tracy Stallard. From the Mark Rucker Collection.
