[BASEBALL]. [BISHOP, MAX (1899-1962), association]. KELLY, G(uy) Guyver (1887-1960). Autograph Note Signed. [1927]. Note signed on the back of a “Ligue Tunisienne de Baseball” envelope, addressed to “Monsieur Bishop”. Approximately 3 x 4 ½”. Some wear, soiling, a vertical crease near the right margin. “Sent from Tokyo where we attended the opening of the season of the Imperial Baseball League (6 universities), 40,000 fans. Our Ligue is happy to have you as an honorary member. The first league in Africa has 72 clubs, all college or high school. The game is played from Marrakech, Morocco, on the west to Bengazi [sic], Cyrenaica 3000 miles east, near Egypt. If ever you have the opportunity to speak a word to a Boy Scouts, American Legion, high school, or other club as to discarded gloves or balls, we would be grateful. Sincerely, C. Kelly was a Methodist minister who was known as the “Baseball Missionary,” who spread Christianity and American Democracy throughout the Middle East and other areas using baseball as his vehicle. The recipient of this note, Max Bishop, was second baseman for the Philadelphia A’s and later the Boston Red Sox between 1924-1935; he was part of the Philadelphia A’s when they won three pennants from 1929-1931, and the World Series from 1929-1930.
