[BASEBALL]. [LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865), association]. “Abraham Lincoln President of the United States” 1862 Native American Peace Medal. Original silver medallion with an embossed profile of Lincoln on the front, and an embossed design of a Native American man preparing to “scalp” another man and bust of a Native American female, with an inset view of Native Americans farming and the FIRST SCENE OF BASEBALL TO BE DEPICTED IN METAL. Medal is 3” in diameter. Attached by a short (later?) chain to a contemporary red velvet collar with embroidered designs of arrows, tomahawks, and leaves, with decorative cloth borders, fringes, and lined on silk on the reverse. Some wear to the medal (the sculptor’s name beneath the Lincoln profile is nearly obliterated), collar is worn, soiled, with several repairs and tears on reverse, some repairs to front of collar near neck area. Overall, a very good example of this rare award. This “medium” sized version of this medal would have been presented to a war chief or other Native American V.I.P. - hence the grand decorative collar. From the Mark Rucker Collection.
