Yerrington & Son, 2 December 1859. Vol. XXIX, No. 48. 4pp., large folio (635 x 457 mm), old fold. THE HARPERS FERRY TRAGEDY. Contains front-page coverage of Brown’s attempted raid on Harpers Ferry as well as his impending execution. Brown’s unsuccessful raid on 16-18 October 1859 was an effort to initiate a slave revolt in Southern states by taking over the United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown was charged by a grand jury with treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, murder, and inciting a slave insurrection. He was sentenced to death on November 2 and was hanged on December 2 (the day this newspaper was published).
