[MEDALLION]. [NELSON, Lord Horatio (1758-1805), subject]. [DAVISON, Alexander (1750-1829), association]. “Rear Admiral Lord Nelson of the Nile” Battle of the Nile Medallion. [England, 1798]. Gilt-finished copper medallion with Victory holding a shield with Nelson’s likeness (“Europe’s Hope and Britain’s Glory”) on recto, and Nelson’s battle fleet captioned “Almighty God Has Blessed His Majesty’s Arms / Victory of the Nile August 1, 1798” on verso. On the edge of the medallion is engraved, “From Alexr Davison Esqr. St. James’s Square = a Tribute of Regard.” Approximately 1 ¾” in diameter. With a small hole at top for a suspension ring. Minor wear, else fine. Produced at his own expense by Alexander Davison, Nelson's prize agent, and presented to every officer and seaman present at the Battle of the Nile. Issued in different base metals based on rank (this version was done for Petty Officers). The back bears a splendidly executed view of the opening stages of the battle. This medal was presented to surviving participants before the British Government minted their own medals for this battle. This version of this medal is rare - it is believed only 506 were delivered by the manufacturer.
