[SILK SUSPENSION CLOCK]. “Duke of Reichstadt” Silk Suspension Mantle Clock. [France, ca. 1820.] This is a very rare and unusual Napoleonic Clock, the only other seen by the collector was in the collection of Malmaison. Ormolu clock is approximately 12 x 18 ¼ x 4”. The subject is Napoleon II, the son of Napoleon and his second wife, Marie Louise. When Napoleon abdicated in 1815, he was exiled to the island of St.Helena and Marie Louise took the boy to the Vienna Court of her father where he unfortunately contracted a disease and died at an early age in 1832. Here he is shown in dress uniform as an Officer of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The clock has a silk thread suspension, typical of all clocks of that period, and of all the clocks in this collection. Some rubbing, mounted figure is slightly loose. Near fine. Untested.
