[FORBES, Edwin (1839-1895), etcher]. Life Studies of the Great Army. [New York: E. Forbes, 1876]. Elephant folio portfolio with all 40 etched plates, loose as issued, with four printed paper part portfolios. Most with loose tissue guards. Plates approximately 19 x 23 ¾”. Housed in original portfolio cloth-covered boards with ties (boards loose, spine perished, boards worn, soiled, ties mostly lacking, paper portfolios creased with some wear, tears, some occasional toning, soiling to plates, plate #15 is matted). With the “Descriptive Index” of the plates affixed to the inner front board. Very good. Forbes was one of the youngest artists working for Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper and Harper’s Weekly; he was one of the few artists who was attached to the Army of the Potomac for the entire war.
