[GRANT, Ulysses S. (1822-1885), association]. COOPER, Peter (1791-1883). Autograph Letter Signed to President-Elect Grant. New York: Nov. 19, 1870. Addressed “President Grant / Honored & Respected Friend”. Three 4to pages on two ruled cream sheets, each sheet with embossed stamp at upper left corner. Each page approximately 9 ? x 7 ?”. Each sheet with two horizontal creases, a few marginal short tears, some general toning, occasional thumbsoiling. Fine. Cooper was an inventor and businessman (he invented the first American steam locomotive, the Tom Thumb), philanthropist (he was in charge of the Board of Indian Commissioners, which implemented U. S. Grant’s Peace Policy with the Native American tribes). This letter of congratulations from Cooper to President-Elect Grant is a lengthy and eloquent missive: “Knowing as I do your sincere desire to promote by every means in your power all the substantial interests of our common country, and having learned by the experience of a long business life how difficult it is to obtain reliable information of the character and qualifications of the men who are constantly pressing their claims for every place where any involvement is to be obtained, I can heartily sympathize with you in this most unpleasant and difficult duty that your office as President requires you to perform… Hoping that your administration as President may be as glorious in peace as your achievements in war have been beneficial to our country. I remain With sincere respect your Friend Peter Cooper”.
