Extensively illustrated with 24 chromolithographic leaves, including two full-page plates (versos blank) of “The Battle of Gettysburg” and “The Battle of Manassas, or Second Bull Run.” The remaining pages have chromolithographic images of one Union and one Confederate general on rectos, with biographical text on rectos and versos. In red cloth ribbon-tied spine over chromolithographic pictorial boards (portraits of “Gen. U. S. Grant” and “Gen. Robt. E. Lee” on front board, and “Merrimac and Monitor Naval Battle” on rear board. Approximately 6 ½ x 10 ¼”. Binding worn, soiled, ribbon ties broken within text, front endleaves with sticker residue and a previous owner’s signature “Chas. Hammen 1896”, a few pages with tears, soiling. Title-page not present (it is unclear if this was issued with a proper title-page). Hinges cracked, some gutters cracked. A fair copy of this scarce, beautifully illustrated book. On the rear pastedown is a lithograph campaign image for Benjamin Harrison and Whitelaw Reid for the 1892 presidential campaign in which they lost (6 x 8 ¾”; this chromolithograph may have been added to this book later).
