[AFRICAN AMERICANA]. Neger-Kappe. Germany, [ca. 1920s]. Racist party mask. Original printed envelope with text describing the mask or party trick in German, French, and English. Original black cloth hood included, folded into the envelope. Envelope approximately 5 x 6”. Hood approximately 11 x 8”. Envelope worn, torn, lightly soiled; hood creased. Very good. From the English translation on the envelope: “The N_____ [edits ours] Cap. New. Great surprise. Wonderful effect. It is possible to become a n_____ in half a minute, and then quickly a white man again. The n_____ cap, which is made of light black tricot, is simply drawn over the head te [sic] end pushed under the collar and the n____ is ready. If in company, one should bend down anter [sic] the table a moment and draw the cap on, or one goes out of the room and comes back a n_____, to the great astonishment of everyone present. Gread [sic] joke. Patented. Enormous succes [sic].”
