CLARK, Keith (Pierre-Jacques Fays, 1908 – 1979). Manuscript and Drafts of The Encyclopedia of Cigarette Tricks. Circa 1935. Approximately 1000 4to sheets both typed and in longhand, together comprising the first edition in manuscript/draft form of Clark’s seminal work on tricks with cigarettes first published in 1937. Included are countless hand-corrected typed chapters for the work, along with dozens of preparatory sketches, suggested cover designs, drawings for the action of “tonguing” a cigarette, and hundreds of pages of notes and drafts of complete chapters in Clark’s hand.
Manuscripts for classic instructional textbooks are uncommon in the magic field. See also lots 224-5 for memorabilia from Clark’s long stage career as both a musician and magician.
