CURTIS, Edward Sheriff (American, 1868-1952). Piegan Encampment. 1900. Hand-colored silver gelatin print affixed to board. Signed in red wax pen lower right. Blindstamp copyright 1900 E.S. Curtis lower left. Image appeared as Plate 20 in Portfolio 6, “The North American Indian, Vol. 6. The Piegan. The Cheyenne. The Arapaho.” Sight 16 x 8 ¾”; frame 23 x 28 ½”. Colors are bright and image presents well. Matted; examined partially out of frame. Curtis describes this scene in Volume 6: “The picture not only presents a characteristic view of an Indian camp on an uneventful day, but also emphasizes the grand picturesqueness of the Piegan, living as they do almost under the shadow of the towering Rocky Mountains.” This version of the image was made through one of several experimental processes Curtis employed over the years. Hand-coloring was done using either oil-based and watercolor paint, or a gum process with ink. All proceeds benefit the Howard L. Gottlieb Foundation, which has been supporting nonprofit organizations in the fine arts since 2015.
