CURTIS, Edward Sheriff (American, 1868-1952). The Rush Gatherer - Kutenai. [Los Angeles: Curtis Studio, ca. early twentieth century]. Toned silver gelatin print. Signed in ink lower right Curtis L.A. Image was originally copyrighted 1910 and appeared as Plate 255 in Portfolio 7, “The North American Indian, Vol. 7. The Yakima. The Klickitat. Salishan tribes of the interior. The Kutenai.” Sight: 10 ¾ x 13 ¾”; frame 20 x 22”. Matted; examined partially out of frame. Image is crisp and presents very well. Curtis described this scene in Volume 7: “Rushes gathered in swamps and in the shallows of the lakes were dried and strung together into mats, which primitively were used for lodge-covers, mattresses, canoe cushions, and for a variety of domestic purposes.” All proceeds benefit the Howard L. Gottlieb Foundation, which has been supporting nonprofit organizations in the fine arts since 2015.
