CURTIS, Edward Sheriff (American, 1868-1952). “In the Land of the Head Hunters” film production photograph [unpublished]. [1914]. Silver gelatin print. Rare production photograph from Curtis’ silent film. Inscribed verso: “Kwakiutl” in ink and “The Mummy Feast” in pencil. Image 8 ½ x 6 ½”; mat 19 x 16”. Free sheet hinged. Light general wear and edgewear. Very good condition. In 1914 Curtis produced a fictional silent film called “In the Land of the Head Hunters.” This was the first feature-length film to exclusively star Native North Americans. It featured non-professional actors from Kwakwaka’wakw (Kwakiutl) communities in British Columbia—a people already famous then for their spectacular visual culture and performances. All proceeds benefit the Howard L. Gottlieb Foundation, which has been supporting nonprofit organizations in the fine arts since 2015.
