CURTIS, Edward Sheriff (American, 1868-1952). Inscription Rock. Twentieth century. Collotype restrike/ reprint of Curtis’ 1925 photogravure. Curtis’s credit, photograph date, title, plate number, and original printmaker’s credit (Suffolk Eng Co.) inscribed on plate. Image appeared as Plate 604 in Curtis’ Portfolio 17, “The North American Indian, Vol 17. The Tewa. The Zun~i.” Image 15 ½ x11 ½”; frame 25 ½ x 21”. Douglas Kenyon Inc. Chicago, IL (label verso). Curtis describes the scene in Volume 17:”Inscription Rock, or El Morro (The Castle), as the Spaniards called it, is a striking landmark on the ancient trail between Acoma and Zuni. Beginning with Juan de Onate, who passed here in April, 1605, on his return to the Rio Grande from “the south sea,” Spanish explorers and the administrators recorded their names and dates on smooth surfaces of the cliff, which reveal also numerous Indian petroglyphs. (See Volume XVII, illustration facing page 88.) Two ancient ruined pueblos are found on the top of the rock.” Not examined out of frame.
