[FOLK ART] (American, 19th Century). Victorian Marquetry Tea Table with Portraits of George and Martha Washington Commemorating LaFayette’s Visit to the United States. Various wood veneers with a more recent varnish. Tabletop: 28” diameter. Height: 28”. This handsome work of political folk art was probably done around the time of Lafayette’s tour of all twenty- four United States, where he often received a hero’s welcome. The symbolism of the All-Seeing Eye and the Masonic Shaking of Hands within an abalone triangle float above the subjects, flanked by two stylized flags, an eagle and shield, and other meaningful ornament. The craft involved in the marquetry is complex and aesthetic. The floral and fauna ornamentation continues at the triangulated claw foot legs. The condition is very good and has survived well. There are a few areas of missing varnish and random areas of crazing, marks and scratches in the tabletop and table overall. Third Party Shipping Required.
