[ARTIST UNKNOWN] (American, 20th century). Rump Theatre, A Miniature Art Deco Theater Diorama. Not dated. Mixed media sculpture encased with glass. 30 h x 36 ¼ w x 31 ½” d. Diorama recreates a theater scene minus an audience. Painted walls are adorned with murals. There are chairs, staircases, a stage, curtains, and actors with scenery. These all help fill in the narrative. The display is illuminated when plugged in and can be recessed into a wall for display. The label at the bottom reads, “The arrangement of this theatre is an attempt to break down the convention of the proscenium arch and to establish a more intimate relationship between actor and audience. Comfortable seating and interchangeable stage units allow great flexibility in methods of production.” The Rump theater referred to smaller makeshift theaters that were often in the back rooms of taverns and served as venues during a time when public theater was restricted. Case has been sealed and is clean and in excellent condition. Exterior case is in worn condition with paint loss and random marks. Paint accretions on label at top. Third party shipping required.
