ARTIST UNKNOWN (French, 19th century). Aubusson Cartoon depicting a variation from The Lady and the Unicorn / Clune Tapestries. Gouache on paper. Sight: 64 x 89”. Frame: 69 h x 94 w x 3 ¾” d. Aubusson is famous for its tapestries made here since the 14th century. This “cartoon”, would have been used as a guide in weaving tapestries. This magnificent example has pin-holes associated with the weaver’s process of registering identifying points of color change while weaving. Tapestry weavers worked while facing what would be the back of the finished piece. The design, referred to as the “cartoon,” took the form of a painting—made on cloth or paper, the same size as the planned tapestry. The cartoon was not physically part of the completed tapestry, and could be reused multiple times in order to make duplicate tapestries. This piece was conserved by the Cleveland Institute of Art approximately 25 years ago after it was purchased. Pinholes overall are inherent. Cracks in paper from use and from rolling. Good condition. Third party shipping required.
