Nineteenth century full brown morocco, boards stamped in blind, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands (binding worn and soiled, front board loose, rear joint starting, gutter facing title-page cracked, ink numerical notes and upper corner clipped on front blank, text toned with intermittent soiling, foxing, occasional offsetting, bookplate on fp.) Fair. FIRST EDITION THUS. This volume by English author Sir Roger L’Estrange (b. 1616) contains English translations of Aesop’s fables, as well as concise explanations of the moral of each fable and a reflection that further expounds upon the moral and contextualizes it within the Baroque period. A brief biography of Aesop, the Greek slave to whom the fables are credited, is included.
