Bound in contemporary half brown morocco over marbled boards, spine ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endleaves (spine worn, some edgewear to boards, some scuffing to front endleaves, front hinge just starting, some foxing in text and on maps). Still, near fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT ACCOUNT OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE SOURCE OF THE MISSISSIPPI. “Most of this narrative is occupied with interesting incidents of Indian life and character, extracts from manuscript journals of the fur-traders, and traditions of the aborigines,” with “an analysis and vocabulary of the Chippewa language” and “official reports of the author, to the government, on the number, disposition, and characteristics of the Indian tribes he visited, and with biographical sketches of their principal chiefs” (Field 1367).
