Appleton and Company, 1864. 8vo. 222, [4, blank] pp. Publisher’s full brown cloth boards triple ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, yellow coated endleaves (binding worn and soiled, possibly recased, front flyleaf missing, text foxed, a few gutters overopened). Good. FIRST EDITION, SECOND STATE, SIGNED BY BRYANT ON THE FFEP, DATED “MARCH 1864”. Above Bryant’s signature written in faint pencil is “Presented to the Metropolitan Fair in aid of the commission by” indicating that this book was donated to the fair by Bryant in order to aid wounded Union soldiers. On the verso of the ffep, is an ink presentation to Elizabeth S. Woodruff, dated July 30th, 1896 (signature of the gift giver is illegible); Woodruff’s bookplate is on the fp. Tipped onto p. 4 is a small photograph of Bryant (worn, soiled).
