Illustrated with all 9 woodcut maps, including the scarce “clover-leaf” world map. Decorative woodcut initials and tailpieces, printer’s device on title-page of second volume. [xvi], 318, [xx], [8], 145, [11] pp. Two volumes bound in one. Text in gothic German. Approximately 8 3 / 8 x 12 ¾”. Bound in contemporary full calf over beveled wooden boards (rebacked in early calf, original clasps missing, binding worn, wear to text and map margins (with some marginal chipping), previous owner’s inscription on title-page of the first volume (not affecting printed text), text toned, and foxed, most of the first 30 leaves laid down and remargined). Fair. THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF BOTH VOLUMES WITH ALL MAPS, INCLUDING THE FAMOUS “CLOVER-LEAF” WORLD MAP. The “clover-leaf” map is allegorical, with the 3 continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa each being a “leaf” in a clover-leaf motif, with Jerusalem in the center (due to it being the religious center of the world at the time). The last part of this book has information about biblical-era coinage. Shirley 142.
