[DEBS, Eugene (1855-1926)] Typed Letter Signed. Terre Haute, Ind., March 29th 1897. 1 ¼ pp. on 1 4to sheet of “General Offices American Railway Union” stationery. Addressed “Mr. J. C. Spence… Dear Brother Spence:-” Approximately 11 x 8 ¼”. Generally toned, 2 vertical and 1 horizontal creases, occasional soiling. Very good. Signed “E. V. Debs” on the verso. With some ink corrections, presumably in Debs’ hand. This letter, addressed to the new representative of the American Railway Union in London, Ontario, gives him instructions as to inducting new members of the union, and what his duties and obligations are. “Enclosed please find your commission. Thease [sic] are issued quarterly and yours will be renewed at the close of the quarter. By even mail I send you a ritual, the secret work and blanks upon which to make your reports. You can obligate applicants in private by simply administering the obligation which you find on page #6 of the ritual. You then report their names to us and we enroll them as members of the General Union…”
