DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870). Our Mutual Friend. With Illustrations by Marcus Stone. London: Chapman and Hall, May, 1864 - November, 1865. 8vos. 40 inserted plates by Marcus Stone. In the original 20 issues in 19 parts. All in publisher’s printed blue-green wrappers (some wear, soiling to wrappers, 12 issues have restored backstrips, plates generally clean with tissue-guards). “Our Mutual Advertiser” in each volume, and with the rare misprint “31” instead of “13” in part 10. Although this copy lacks the rare 4-page insert, “The Economic Life Assurance Society” in part 14, it does have the uncommon “Foreign Bank Notes” slip in part 19/20, as well as the slip addressed to the reader in part 1. FIRST EDITION IN PARTS, FIRST ISSUE (no printer’s imprint on the wrapper of part 1, and the aforementioned “31” misprint). Very good. Chemised in burgundy cloth slipcase. The title to the book was selected four years before publication, but Dickens’ health issues and his efforts to keep “All the Year Round” afloat delayed the eventual publication of this book. This is Dickens’ final completed novel. Hatton and Cleaver pp. 345-370. Eckel pp. 94-95.
