Bound in contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards, spine ruled and lettered in gilt (binding worn, soiled, front board cracked (yet solid) near the joint), ffep missing, text foxed and occasionally toned and soiled, ink note (“Feby 11th 1888”) on p. [1], rfep missing lower half. Very good. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST MAGAZINES PRINTED WEST OF THE OHIO RIVER. ONE OF ONLY A FEW COPIES KNOWN (“Fine complete file of one of the first magazines published West of the Ohio River. One of three known copies; the other two being in WISCONSIN HISTORI-CAL SOCIETY, and the WESTERN RESERVE HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Contains the Narrative of Captain Hubbell’s encounter with the Indians on the Ohio River in 1794, and a reprint of Caleb Atwater’s ANTIQUITIES OF THE PEOPLE WHO FORMERLY INHABITED THE WESTERN PARTS OF THE UNITED STATES.” - Midland Notes No. 20 Americana, 1944, as per rarebookhub.com; this is the most recent entry for this magazine on that site, although it is unlikely that this is the same copy, based on the binding description).
