Illustrated with woodcut printer’s device on title-page, 4 divisional titles printed within elaborate woodcut architectural borders, woodcut and letterpress illustration of the Great Seal of King William of Sicily, plus numerous head- and tail-pieces and historiated initials. [iv],[1]-520, [30, “Fasti Regum et Episcoporum Angliae…” chronological tables] fols. Text in Latin (a few words or passages in English). Approximately 12 ¼ x 8 ?”. Late 16th full limp vellum with ink titles to spine. Savile’s dedication to Queen Elizabeth I on fol. [ii]. Some wear, soiling to binding, text toned, foxed, with occasional wear or chipping, pencil notations, some tears to pastedowns. Still, a near fine copy. FIRST EDITION and Editio Princeps of the works included. The works included are: De gestis regum Anglorum, lib. V (“On the Deeds of the English Kings in 5 books” by William of Malmesbury), Historia novella, lib. II (“The New History” in 2 books by Malmesbury), De gestis pontificum Angl., lib. IIII (“On the Deeds of the English Bishops” in 4 books by Malmesbury), Historiarum, lib. VIII (“Histories” in 8 books by Henry, Archdeacon of Huntingdon), Annals (in 2 parts, by Roger of Howden), The Chronicles of Ethelwerd (in 4 books - written under a pseudonym), Histories (by Ingulf - Croyland Chronicle). This copy has the bookplates of Daniel Rock (an English Catholic priest, ecclesiologist, and antiquarian) and St. John’s Seminary on the front endleaves.
