Approximately 12 x 17”. Plates numbered in Roman numerals. No text leaves. Bound in modern half calf over marbled boards, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, plain grey modern endleaves, pages with nineteenth-century marbled edges (plates somewhat toned, foxed, occasional dampstains). Fine. THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF “A Collection of One Hundred & Eighty Two of Two Hundred Plates representing the Civil and Military Religious Customs of the Ancient Egyptians, Etruscans, Greeks and Romans, the plates depicting Greek, Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian military armour, weapons, chariots, ships, sandals, boxing gloves or cestus, musical instruments, hair styles, vases, lamps, candelabra, tripods, friezes, statues and furniture taken from ancient classical monuments and sculptures.” Copperplate engravings by Pietro Ruga after designs by Lorenzo Roccheggiani, an Italian draughtsman and engraver active from 1788 to 1817, producing many books on classical design for the use of professors of the fine arts (“per uso de’Professori delle Belle Arti”).
