[PRE-REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENGRAVING]. [TOMS, William Henry (1700-1765), engraver]. “An Exact Prospect of Charles Town, the Metropolis of the Province of South Carolina.” London: London Magazine, [ca. 1762]. Pre-revolutionary engraved view of the waterfront of Charleston Harbor, with numerous sailing ships (including two with British flags) and six fishermen in the foreground. Some structures labeled with letters (A - G), identifying key is not present. On laid paper. Approximately 7 ¾ x 21 ?”. Four vertical folds and several creases, some toning, right margin trimmed a bit unevenly. Fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE ENGRAVING. This was the earliest available view of Charles Town (becoming Charleston in 1783). There was a later issue produced in 1779; it can be distinguished from this 1762 first issue by the absence of the sailing ship at the lower left corner in the later issue.
