An interesting pair of books about the sensational and scandalous relationship between wealthy Robber Baron Fisk, his mistress Mansfield, and his business partner (and another of Mansfield’s paramours) Stokes. After the married Fisk installed Mansfield in a nice apartment, she started a relationship with the less successful (yet more handsome) Stokes; they tried to extort Fisk with threats of publishing his letters which allegedly pointed to financial crimes. Fisk refused to pay, and this scandal became a public sensation. On January 6, 1872, Stokes confronted Fisk at the Grand Central Hotel, and, after an argument, shot Fisk (Fisk died the next day). After three trials, Stokes was eventually sentenced to 6 years for Manslaughter.
