Engraved portrait frontispieces with tissue guards, folding facsimile letter tipped–in Volume I, folding map and facsimile document in Vol. 2, numerous maps and wood–engravings throughout. Original publisher’s gilt–lettered green cloth stamped with central gilt medallions on both covers, gilt–lettered spines stamped with 4-star shoulder straps gilt, floral printed endpapers (spines lightly toned and worn, some rubbing, bumping to boards, rear hinges starting in both volumes). Very good. FIRST EDITION of Grant’s classic memoirs published by Mark Twain, who considered the work “the best memoirs of a general since Caesar."
