With the rare engraved title-page depicting Mercury. [xiv], 1-1048, [22, Register]. Approximately 6 x 3 ½”. Bound in contemporary full brown calf, boards stamped with gilt central armorial stamp, spine tooled in blind in compartments, four raised bands (binding worn, chipped, soiled, stamping and possible label on spine toned or worn away, spine rolled, hinges starting, frontispiece a bit loose, text with occasional soiling, wear, chipping, several gutters overopened or starting, last 25 or so leaves and rear endleaves with worm damage near lower corner). Good. FIRST EDITION OF VOLUME 1 (OF AN EVENTUAL 3) OF THIS SET. This volume has an article that satirizes American sloth. This set was source material for Grimmelshausen (1621-1676), author of the best-selling Simplicissimus novels.
