LUMMIS, Charles Fletcher (C.F.) (1859-1928). Two Cabinet Cards of Penitentes Crucifixion. New Mexico, 1888. Two cabinet/boudoir card photographs depicting Penitentes engaged in a ritual “crucifying” one of their own in New Mexico. Copyright 1888 C.F. Lummis in negative, photographer’s red stamp on the right side. Also labeled in negative “Penitentes. 79.” and “80.” Image 4 ½ x 7 ?”. Edges to card worn. Very minor scuffs to surface. Photographs somewhat faded and toned, overall very good condition.Los Penitentes were known for their songs of worship and ascetic practices, which included self-flagellation in private ceremonies during Lent, and processions during Holy Week which ended with the reenactment of Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday. The images and story of the ritual were published in Cosmopolitan in 1889; an early break in the Lummis’s then budding career.
