[SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE]. Large Collection of Nearly 225 Original Stereoscopic Cards of the 1906 Earthquake and its Aftermath. [V.p., ca. 1906]. Stereoscopic cards of the horrific damage of the great earthquake, fire, and the aftermath, most cards with descriptive text. Cards approximately 3 ½ x 7”. Some general wear, most cards a bit curled (as is most common for vintage stereoscopic cards). Generally fine. A fascinating and occasionally disturbing look into the horror of one of the twentieth century’s worst natural disasters. Nearly half of the cards use real photographs, the rest are lithographic or halftone reproductions (about 65 are in color). The publishers of these cards include: Underwood (about 50 cards), Keystone (about 12), H. C. White (about 16), World Wide View Co., American Stereoscopic Co., Western Photo Co., George W. Griffith, W. S. Smith, and others. Provenance: the Marilyn Blaisdell Collection (occasional ink notes with her name). Blaisdell (1928-2016) was a historian of San Francisco history, and she wrote several books about the city’s history and landmarks.
