Very good. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT MILITARY HISTORY OF TEXAS. THIS COPY WITH A DISTINGUISHED AMERICAN MILITARY PEDIGREE, HAVING BEEN OWNED BY 3 OFFICERS, INCLUDING THEIR OWNERSHIP MARKINGS ON THE FFEP: including Matthew Forney Steele (1861-1953) who served in the Eighth Cavalry at Fort Clark Texas (he has signed this book numerous times and made numerous pen or pencil notes throughout); the small label of “Major Frank L. Anders” (1875-1966), who received the Medal of Honor for his distinguished service in the Philippine-American War. The book has a gift inscription from “Col. M. F. Quill [?]”. There are also notes on the ffep which indicate appearances of Henry W. Lawton, West Point graduate, who died in the Philippines in 1899. Besides this book having a distinguished ownership pedigree, it is “One of the best sources on the Federal cavalry campaigns against the Indians in the 1870s.” (Basic Texas Books, 25).
