Bound by Henington in contemporary full brown straight grain morocco, boards ruled in gilt, both volumes rebacked to style in modern brown calf, tooled in gilt in compartments, both volumes with 2 original burgundy gilt morocco lettering labels, original marbled endleaves, all edges marbled (some wear to boards and labels, text and plates somewhat foxed, armorial bookplate of “Hartshorne” on both fps). Fine. FIRST EDITION OF THIS TRAVEL BOOK, WHICH SOLVED THE MYSTERY OF LA PEROUSE’S DISAPPEARANCE. This book also describes a voyage in which Dillon (as Third Mate) and his shipmates came afoul of the Fijian natives and violence exploded; he and 5 shipmates were able to survive (it describes how the natives devoured Dillon’s fallen comrades).
