Illustrated with 13 plates by Vernon Howe Bailey (1874-1953) and Lester Ralph (1877-1927). 406 pp. Publisher’s parchment backstrip over tan cloth boards, front board and spine stamped in gilt (binding toned, soiled, with some edgewear, front hinge just barely starting). Very good. FIRST EDITION, ONE OF 200 COPIES PRINTED ON JAPANESE VELLUM. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY WISTER ON THE FFEP: “with the affectionate regards of Owen Wister July 23, 1907”. An excellent association. The recipient, Amos Tuck French (1863-1941) signed his name above the inscription, and his bookplate is present on the fp. French was prominent in society and was a successful banker.
