[COLONIAL LEGAL WRIT]. FALES, Captain Timothy (1690-1777). Partially Printed Sheriff’s Legal Writ. Bristol County, March 22, 1728. 1 oblong 8vo page on one 8vo leaf. Approximately 6 ¼ x 7 ½” on laid paper with red wax seal at upper left corner. Signed by Fales at lower right corner. 4 vertical creases, some edgewear, marginal creases, occasional soiling. Very good. In this writ, blacksmith Zachariah Field of Rehoboth is ordered to court “to Answer unto John Torrey of Barrington in ye County of Bristol… ye sum of twelve pounds & twelve shillings good & Lawful money which is justly Due & owing to ye plantf…” In addition to Fales’ signature, it is signed on verso by Deputy sheriff Ephraim Ingraham [?] and John Torrey [?]. Fales was a sea captain (sometime before 1720) and later became the Justice of the Peace and the first clerk to the Inferior Court of Common Pleas and the Court of Sessions of Bristol County.
