McCarthy was the Senator from Wisconsin, most famous for his well-publicized search for Communist subversion in American government (often without evidence); the term “McCarthyism,” which means the reckless destruction of the reputation of people without evidence or proof, was named for this controversial figure (he was eventually censured by the Senate in 1954.
