Archive of 17 Documents Related to Colonel and Assistant Secretary of War William Sanger, Signed by Various Presidents or Officials. [New York, Washington D. C., 1897-1917]. Included herein are several documents printed by Bailey, Banks, & Biddle and other government printers. Some general wear, creases. Generally very good or better. This collection consists primarily of certificates primarily related to honors that Sanger received, or correspondence (including an original telegram) related to the 1906 Geneva Convention delegation. Sanger was the Assistant Secretary of War under Elihu Root from 1901-1903. He was also instrumental in the reorganization of the American Red Cross in 1905 as well as the negotiations that led to the 1906 revisions to the Geneva Convention of 1864. He wrote the “Report on the reserve and auxiliary forces of England, and the militia of Switzerland, prepared in 1900 for President McKinley and Hon. Elihu Root, Secretary of War” (1903, part of this archive). The Sanger family papers (1792-1956) are housed at the New York State Library. Full and complete description available upon request.
