RICKENBACKER, Captain Eddie (1890-1973). Archive of Autograph Items and Other Ephemera. [V.p. ca. 1940s-1970s]. Included in this archive are 7 typed letters signed (1960s, all signed “Eddie”) on personal or Eastern Air Lines stationery to Royal Frey of the Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, 4 various mimeographed unsigned copies of letters from Frey to Rickenbacker, 1 original black and white photo of Rickenbacker and the 94th Aero Squadron officers (5 x 7”, worn with chips), 1 original black and white photo of Rickenbacker leaning against a Spad along with 4 other officers of the 94th Aero Squadron (5 x 7” some wear, chipping), 1 original black and white Army Signal Corps photo of a Spad (5 x 7”), 1 original black and white Army Signal Corps photo of a crashed Nieuport (5 x 7”), 1 black and white photo of Rickenbacker in the cockpit of a Spad, inscribed by him to Joseph P. Brosnan (8 x 10” photo is a later print from 1961), 4 real photo postcards of Rickenbacker with his Spad (1 with him with his cane), 1 small snapshot of Rickenbacker (3 ¼ x 2”), 17 mixed photos (about half are later prints) of various scenes from WWI, including a few with Rickenbacker or members of the 94th Aero Squadron, 40 assorted photos or later prints (black and white, some colorized) of Rickenbacker in various stages of his career, a few newspaper and magazine clippings, the February 1958 issue of True The Man’s Magazine with Rickenbacker on the cover, Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker (Dell Publishing, 1941) magazine. Photos, postcards, and articles are mounted onto glued scrapbook sheets - letters are loose. Also included are six books about Rickenbacker, various editions; titles include We Thought We Heard The Angels Sing, Rickenbacker’s Luck, Rickenbacker’s Full Story, From Father to Son the Letters of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Eddie Rickenbacker An American Hero in the Twentieth Century (jackets generally worn, torn, with occasional tape repairs). Overall, a very good archive. Rickenbacker was the most decorated American flying ace of WWI and a Medal of Honor and other awards recipient. He also founded an automobile company and Eastern Air Lines; he also owned the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for more than a decade.
