ROOSEVELT, Eleanor (1884-1962). Inscribed Photograph. [New York]: Underwood & Underwood, [1933]. Black and white gelatin photograph of Mrs. Roosevelt at the bottom of the Grand Staircase in her inaugural gown for the first inauguration. Inscribed by her to her cousin and close friend, Paulina Roosevelt (1925-1957), the only child of Theodore Roosevelt’s (1858-1919) daughter, Alice (1884-1980): “To dear Paulina with love + best wishes from Eleanor Roosevelt”. Photograph is mounted beneath plastic. Sight approximately 9 ½ x 7 ½”. Mat size approximately 14 x 11”. Photo is a bit toned, with some minor occasional thumbsoiling and faint marginal creasing. Near fine. Paulina was born during the marriage of Alice Roosevelt and Ohio Congressman Nicholas Longworth (1869-1931), although it was rumored that Paulina was the illegitimate child of Alice and Senator William Borah (1865-1940). Paulina was a close friend and confidant to her cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt. An excellent association.
