ROOSEVELT, Franklin Delano (1882-1945). Typed Letter Signed. New York City: Fidelity and Deposit Company of Maryland, July 20, 1928. 1 4to page on 1 4to leaf of watermarked white stationery of the Fidelity and Deposit Company. Addressed to his physical therapist at the Warm Springs rehabilitation center, Helena Mahoney, “Dear Hony:” and initialed by him at the lower right. Approximately 10 ½ x 7 ¼”. Two horizontal creases. Fine. “You have certainly had a mighty hard two weeks and I wish I could have stayed on at Warm Springs to help out in the crisis… Missy [Marguerite “Missy” LeHand, 1896-1944, F. D. R.’s secretary (and possible mistress) who eventually functioned as the de facto Chief of Staff in the White House] got home all right although she had a bad digestive upset. On Monday she was much better but that night ate a large quantity of popcorn, and has been in bed again for the last three days…” This letter also mentions Dr. Leroy Hubbard, the director and founder of Warm Springs. Warm Springs was the rehabilitation center that Roosevelt attended to help him cope with his Polio; it was made famous by the 2005 HBO film, Warm Springs, starring Kenneth Branagh as Roosevelt, and Kathy Bates as Mahoney. F. D. R. used a large portion of his personal wealth to renovate and improve the Warm Springs facility.
