TAFT, William Howard (1857-1930). Typed Letter Signed as President, Mentioning Golf. Beverly, Massachusetts, September 9, 1912. Addressed, “My dear Charlie:” and signed “Wm H Taft”. 1 4to page on folding bifolium leaf on White House Stationery on white paper with watermark (“Whiting’s Woven Linen”). Letter is approximately 8 ? x 7”. One horizontal crease, some toning, wrinkling. Very good. In this friendly letter, Taft thanks Ricks for his apparent suggestion to try “Doctor Phillips’ remedy” for Taft’s ankle, as “my ankle is very greatly improved. A few more days of rest, and I’ll be out on the links again.” (Taft sprained his ankle while golfing in early September, 1912 - Taft’s penchant for golf was ridiculed in the press, and may have hurt his chances for re-election.) The recipient, Charles A. Ricks (1869-1914) was a manager for Standard Oil in Cleveland.
