WASHINGTON, William Augustine (1757-1810). Autograph Note Signed. Fairfax County [VA], March 30th, 1796. Signed “W A Washington”. 1 4to page on one 4to leaf. One white laid paper with “1794” watermark. Approximately 9 ¾ x 7 ½”. 1 vertical and 3 horizontal creases, some wear, soiling, a few additional creases. Very good. This note is a receipt of a legal notice (the text of which is on the verso, written and signed by George Chapman, Jr., and witnessed by his father, George Chapman, Snr.) Text of Washington’s note: “Then came Philip Alexander before me Magistrate for the County aforesaid and made oath on the Holy Evangelist of almighty God that he did on the Twenty ninth Day of March 1796 deliver a true copy of the within notice to Mrs. Chapman wife of Mr. George Chapman Senr. given from and in my hand this 30th day of March 1796.” William Augustine Washington was the nephew of George Washington (1732-1799), and was a Virginia planter and served a term in the Virginia House of Delegates. He was one of the seven executors for the estate of his uncle, the president.
