Neon Sign Art Maquette for “Chicken Southern Fried” Sign. 1950s. Maquette on illustration board for a roadside restaurant. Tempera on black illustration board. 28 x 18”. From the Sun-Lite Neon Sign Company of Murray, Utah, south of Salt Lake City. This company created and serviced commercial signage with an emphasis on unique custom designs in neon. They employed an ingenious technique of creating custom proposal maquettes to present to their prospective commercial clients. An artist designed a rendering of the sign on black paper. And then, in what surely must have been a show-stopper in the pitch, shut off the room lighting and flooded the proposal art with fluorescent blacklight, activating the reactive paint to mimic the neon glow of the signage at night. 28 x 18”. Minor wear.
