Pair of Handbills Related to the Struggle of African Americans, including: “Help Free James Hickman!...” [Chicago: Allied Printers, ca. 1947]. Handbill with an image of Hickman and his family (the 3 children in this photo died in a fire in the attic in which they were living). 12 x 9”. Toned, with creases, and a few short tears, faint pencil notes on verso. Good. This handbill was for a defense rally for Hickman; four of Hickman’s seven children died in a fire that swept through the tiny attic that they lived in, owned by slumlord David Coleman. After they died, Hickman murdered Coleman. This rally, featuring actress Tallulah Bankhead, tried to raise funds for Hickman’s defense. And: The Pullman Porters The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters The Independent Pullman Porters Union is pleased to announce that it has Completely defeated the stool pigeon, the welfare worker, the porter instructor, the lickspitle politician, the weak-kneed negro business man… [Chicago, ca. 1920s-1930s]. Letterpress broadside. 11 x 6”. Chipped at upper margin, several tears, some toning, one horizontal crease. Good. This broadside exults the bravery of the rank-and-file pullman porters and advertises union meetings.
