ETIENNE (Dom Orejudos, 1933 – 1991). Don’t Miss Leather Nite at the Gold Coast. [Chicago, IL: The Gold Coast, ca. 1970s]. Broadside advertising the weekly “Leather Nite” at The Gold Coast leather bar. Artwork (unsigned) by Etienne. Sight 16 ½ x 10 ½”. Framed under glass at a later time; frame size 17 ¼ x 11 ¼”. On the verso is a signature from Gary Chichester’s friend who had this framed in 2005, “JB Feb 2005”. Fine. A rare broadside. Provenance: Collection of Gary Chichester.

Gary Chicester has been an activist and advocate for gay and lesbian rights since the early 1970s. He co-founded the Chicago Gay Alliance in 1971, and has served on the Chicago Commission on Human Relations’ Advisory Council on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues, and was a member of the Chicago Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame Committee since its founding in 1991. He had worked for legendary Chicago gay pioneer Chuck Renslow, and managed Renslow’s bar, The Gold Coast, one of the first openly gay bars in the United States. Chichester is an inductee of the Chicago LGBT Hall of Fame (inducted in 1992).
