Edo Period Japanese Handscroll. Japan, [ca. 1829]. Gold leaf, calligraphy, and color paintings on paper. Very long Japanese handscroll with 34 paintings. Collections of paintings praising famous places and songs by famous artists. With later hand-written academic notes detailing the condition and historical context, [relating the scroll to the commemoration of the Retirement of Lord Shimazu (Shimazu Nariakira)]. In a later box with newer ties added to the scroll. Approximately 14 x 398”. Paper lightly toned. Very good.
